You instinctively thought to answer “10 cents”, didn’t you?
The correct answer was: 5 cents! If you answered differently, don’t worry about it! Most people answered 10 cents as well. You’re perhaps wondering why the wrong answer is much more common.

The human brain has two cerebral systems which can be used in solving problems: a fast system, centered around emotions, and a slow system, centered around reason. Our brain functions on autopilot mode, utilizing these two systems in a particular order. Because you had to give a quick answer to the question above, your brain made use of system 1, based on emotions.
